Tutorial: Realistic Head Creation
(3D Modeling)

Now that you've familiar yourself with the proportion of a human head, it's time to touch on the 3D s/w, in this case SoftImage|3D. There are basically 3 techniques to create human head in 3D.

  • Skinning
  • Pulling From Sphere
  • Patch

Different 3D artist prefer different methods and each individual methods have advantage and disadvantage. I myself would prefer "Pulling From Sphere" method because a sphere itself possess contour lines that is similiar to the face.

For me, I started with a NURBS sphere step 32 x 32. You can use 16 x 16 if you are a beginner. 32 x 32 is very complicated sphere i should warned. When I first started with it, I was very frustrated and complained "How the hell HID did it?" (Hid is creator of virtual model Sayuri. He has a tutorial which is similiar but more detailed. I learned how to create human head from there, so its worth to take a look.)

Rotate the sphere about 120 degree like this. As you can see from the image, the human features are as follow on the sphere.

Note: The end of the sphere where all the points meet is the mouth.

Use a 8x8x8 lattice to work from general to specific (how irony? :P) Do you get the idea of using lattice to model a head now? Please don't be scared when you see the mesh of my Minami. It took me about 1 day to come up with a presentable head and takes many many hrs to tweak it to a good looking head. Just be patient...
